FAQ

1) How do you size up an air compressor
A)   This will vary due to what the air operated equipment is. Sizing up a compressor for air tools is different than continuous air usage for bottling plants etc. Firstly find out what air operated equipment the factory is using. Add the air usage up and allow an extra 20% for future usage. This is only a rough guide. Please contact your compressor company to size up your compressor correctly.

2) Do we need an air receiver?
A)   Yes. All compressors should have an air receiver. This will help stop the compressor from hunting                                                                                                                 and the bigger the receiver is the better. Compressors that are on modulation also should have an air receiver, as it helps with big fluctuations on air demand. An air receiver also helps remove around 80% of water in the air.

3) How do I size up an air receiver?
A)  To correctly size up an air receiver, go to www.kaeser.com.au and go to online services and air receiver sizing. Put in the parameters and the formula will give the size receiver that is required.

4) Should I buy a screw type air compressor or a piston air compressor?
A)  It depends on the size of compressor, and the quality of air required. Tank mounted piston compressors only go up to 30HP and have around 10 times the oil carry over, compared to a screw air compressor. After 30HP, screw air compressors are generally used now.

5) Should I have the complete air compressor overhauled, or just the bare compressor?
A) It is wise to completely overhaul air compressors, not just the bare air end. There are many other components on an air compressor, that can break down, electric motors, pressure switches, non return valves, contactors, to name just a few parts that would need replacing or repairing.

6) Why should I buy a Kaeser compressor instead of a cheaper screw air compressor?
A) Kaeser compressors are on most minesites throughout Western Australia and are renowned for their     reliability. The old saying is “you get what you pay for”.

7) What quality of air do I require?
A) It depends on what you are using the air for. With dryers and filtration, you can have Technically 100% oil and water free air. Breathing air is also no problem to obtain.

8) What pipe work should I install in my factory?
A)
 There are now many types of different pipe work you can install in a factory. From galvanized pipe, to plastic type pipe, and now aluminum pipe work. Copper piping is also used. We would now recommend to use aluminimum piping because it is simple to install, doesn’t sag and is rust resistant.

9) Should I buy a variable speed compressor, or a standard air compressor?
A) Variable speed air compressors are more expensive. With the right application, you can save money on power bills. We have found many variable speed air compressors have had problems. Standard on load off load compressors are more simple and easier to repair, if anything goes wrong on the electrics.

10)  Why do I need to spend money on a refrigerated Dryer?
A) All compressors should have at least a refrigerated dryer, to remove water from the air. Water can cause major damage to air operated equipment.
