Industry: Mining
The Challenge
One of Australia’s largest mining companies required the replacement of existing compressors at their Port Hedland operation, where equipment is exposed to some of Australia’s harshest operating conditions. Extreme heat, airborne dust, high salinity and ongoing corrosion risks meant standard compressor packages were unlikely to deliver the reliability or service life required. The new system needed to be purpose-built to operate consistently in a demanding coastal mining environment.
The Solution
Pneumatic Engineering supplied a modified ELGi EQ18 compressor package specifically engineered for long-term performance in Port Hedland conditions. Following a detailed on-site assessment, the EQ18 was selected as the most suitable platform and upgraded to address environmental and operational challenges.
The package included heavy-duty filtration to manage airborne dust, an oversized dryer to control moisture, and upgraded air intake screens to protect internal components. An enhanced controller was incorporated to enable remote monitoring and operation, improving visibility and control for site personnel. To combat corrosion, all external surfaces were clear-coated, providing an additional layer of protection against salt exposure.

Results
The client now operates a compressed air system designed to withstand extreme coastal conditions while delivering a stable and reliable air supply. The upgraded package has improved system resilience and provided confidence that the compressor will perform consistently in one of Australia’s toughest industrial environments.
