Case Study: Extending Asset Life Through a Smart Skid Retrofit

Industry: Mining

The Challenge

A mining company required the replacement of an ageing skid-mounted compressor at the Telfer Mine, a remote mining site where downtime and logistics costs can be significant. The existing skid and receiver were still serviceable, but the compressor itself had reached the end of its operational life. Fabricating a new skid would have increased costs, extended lead times, and disrupted site operations.

The Solution

Pneumatic Engineering proposed retrofitting the existing skid with a new ELGi compressor. This solution leveraged the client’s previous experience with ELGi units supplied by Pneumatic Engineering on new skid packages, which had proven reliable in demanding mining environments. By reusing the existing skid and receiver, the project avoided unnecessary fabrication while delivering a modern, high-performance compressor upgrade.

The retrofit involved modifying the skid framework to suit the ELGi compressor’s dimensions and integrating it with the retained receiver and peripheral components. Careful consideration was given to alignment, access, and long-term serviceability to ensure the system could be maintained efficiently on site.

Results

The retrofit was completed with minimal disruption to operations and delivered a reliable, cost-effective compressed air solution. The client benefited from reduced capital expenditure, shorter installation timeframes, and improved system reliability, demonstrating Pneumatic Engineering’s capability to deliver practical, site-specific solutions for remote mining applications.
