The Challenge
A mining company engaged Pneumatic Engineering to complete a full overhaul of an Atlas Copco G160 air compressor operating underground at the Telfer Mine in Western Australia. The 160 kW, 1000-volt skid-mounted compressor is critical to daily mining operations and had been subjected to sustained mechanical and electrical stress in a harsh underground environment. Maintaining reliability and minimising downtime were essential.
The Solution
Pneumatic Engineering carried out a complete end-to-end overhaul at its Welshpool workshop. The compressor was pre-tested on arrival to confirm its running condition and identify mechanical and electrical issues before disassembly. This allowed the scope of work to be accurately defined.
The unit was then fully stripped down, with all components inspected, measured, cleaned, rebuilt, or replaced as required. The air end was dismantled and re-bearinged, with additional repairs completed due to identified damage. The main motor was removed and re-bearinged, while electrical inspections covered contactors, wiring, and cabinet connections. Coolers were cleaned and tested, valves and hoses replaced where necessary, and oil circuits flushed and cleaned.
Results
Once reassembled to original equipment manufacturer specifications, the compressor underwent full performance testing prior to dispatch. The overhauled Atlas Copco G160 was returned to the client ready for immediate operation, with efficiency and reliability restored and service life extended by an estimated four to five years. This project demonstrates Pneumatic Engineering’s capability to deliver complex compressor overhauls for critical mining operations in Western Australia.
